NATIONAL CHILD HEALTH DAY

Each child deserves to be the healthiest he or she can be.  On National Child Health Day, we are reminded of all the ways children grow healthy and strong.  From the food they eat to the words they hear, children require support and opportunities to grow.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Go for a walk, play in a park, do some yard work or participate in activities to promote child health.  Use #ChildHealthDay to post on social media.
HISTORY
Each year since 1928, under a joint Resolution of Congress, the President of the United States has proclaimedChild Health Day.  This day was originally observed on each May 1 until 1960 when the date was changed to the first Monday in October of each calendar year.
In a response to a plea from both the American Federation of Labor and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs to proclaim the day, United States President Calvin Coolidge was the first president to issue a Child Health Day Proclamation while the resolution was still pending in Congress.
There are over 1,200 national days. Don’t miss a single one. Celebrate Every Day with National Day Calendar!

Parents’ maths skills ‘rub off’ on their children Too

Parents’ maths skills ‘rub off’ on their children, say scientists

The study specifically explored inter-generational transmission -- the concept of parental influence on an offspring’s behaviour or psychology -- in mathematic capabilities.(Instagram)

Bad at maths? Your parents are to be blamed. Parents who excel at mathematics produce children who would also excel, says a study, which shows a distinct transfer of math skills from parent to child.

The study specifically explored inter-generational transmission -- the concept of parental influence on an offspring’s behaviour or psychology -- in mathematic capabilities.

“Our findings suggest an intuitive sense for numbers has been passed down knowingly or unknowingly from parent to child. Meaning, the math skills of parents tend to ‘rub off’ on their children,” said lead researcher Melissa E. Libertus, Assistant Professor at University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, US.

The study revealed that the performance levels for early school-aged children on standardised mathematic tests could be reliably predicted by their parent’s performance in similar examinations.

Specifically, major correlations in parent-child performance in such key areas as mathematical computations, number-fact recall, and word problem analysis were observed.

In addition, the children’s intuitive sense of numbers - that is, the ability to know that 20 jelly beans are more than 10 jelly beans without first counting them - is predicted by their parents’ intuitive sense of numbers, the researchers said.

“We believe the relationship between a parent and a child’s math capabilities could be some combination of hereditary and environmental transmission,” Libertus added.

The findings represent the first evidence of intergenerational transmission of unlearned, nonverbal numerical competence from parents to children.

The study is an important step toward understanding the multifaceted parental influences on children’s mathematic abilities.

“This research could have significant ramifications for how parents are advised to talk about math and numbers with their children and how teachers go about teaching children in classrooms,” Libertus noted, in the paper published in the journal Developmental Science.

For the study, the math abilities of 54 children between the ages of five and eight as well as 51 parents - 46 mothers and five fathers - between the ages of 30 and 59 were assessed.

Children completed three subtests designed to gauge their capabilities in mathematical computations, basic number-fact recall, and word problems with visual aids.

Parents completed a math fluency subtest as a measure of mathematical ability, and they were surveyed on the importance of children developing certain math skills.

4-year-old UP child prodigy studying in Class IX

4-year-old UP child prodigy studying in Class IX

Lucknow: Her sister Sushma is 15 and is doing her doctorate in microbiology after completing masters in the same subject.

Her brother Shailendra had passed high school examination at the age of nine and now Ananya, at the age of four, has been admitted straightaway into class nine — and this even before she has started formal schooling.

Ananya, who completes the family trinity, is the youngest starter in this family of child prodigies.

Their father, Tej Bahadur Varma, now a supervisor in the Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University, had taken Ananya to the market when he met a teacher from the St Mira’s College where his two other children had studied.

While the teacher got talking to the father, Ananya picked up one of her books and started reading it. The teacher was astounded and called Tej Bahadur and Ananya to the school. Ananya was asked to take a test and she was found fit for admission to class nine.

The school manager Vinod Ratra said, “Ananya is even more talented than her siblings. We have sought permission for her admission to class 9 from the district inspector of schools and have cited the cases of her siblings. We are confident of getting the permission and we will also ensure that Ananya gets free education in our institution”.

Incidentally, Sushma was five years old when she was admitted to class nine in the same school.

Tej Bahadur says that his children have never taken tuitions or any special facilities simply because he could never afford them. “Ananya has been a quick learner. She would just pick up any book and start reading even. She even started reading the Ramayana and now remembers most of it by heart. She is a quiet child and never makes demands,” says her mother Chhaya.

About his all three children being prodigies, Taj Bahadur says, “It is all God’s gift. My children wanted to study and I could not afford them good education so probably god gave them exceptional talent. My children have even built a future for their father because it was their fame that got me this job”.

Ananya, however, is undecided about what she wants to become when she grows up.

She smiles and evades questions but her mother says, “We are not going to pressurise her at all. She can choose what she wants to do and we will do our best for her”.

9-Year-Old Anvitha Vijay Is the Youngest Developer at Apple's WWDC 2016

New York: A nine-year-old Indian-origin girl has earned the distinction of being the youngest app developer at Apple's annual developer conference with her apps for children and she now dreams of meeting the tech giant's CEO Tim Cook.

Anvitha Vijay from Australia is the youngest attendee at WWDC 2016 in San Francisco and has already built several apps for iPhone and iPad, a report in Fortune said.

Vijay spent a year watching free coding tutorials on YouTube and the web, and learned how to program. "Coding was so challenging. But I'm so glad I stuck with it," she said.

Vijay, who has been developing apps about empowering children, hopes to meet Cook during the conference. "It's my dream to go to WWDC and meet Tim Cok," she said.

Vijay is attending WWDC as part of Apples scholarship program, which gives hundreds of free tickets to developers from around the world who are creating apps for Apple devices.

Out of 350 recipients this year, 120 are students under the age of 18, Fortune said, adding that the number of women who applied for the scholarship tripled this year, and this year, 22 per cent of scholarship winners are women, which is an increase from last year.

The report said Vijay's apps were inspired by her toddler sister, who was learning how to talk and identify animals. Her brainchild was the Smartkins Animals app, which uses sounds, and flashcards to help teach children 100 different animals' names and sounds.

She then developed another similar interactive iOS app for children to help them learn colors and is now already working on her next app, which wants to help kids her won age with setting goals.

"Turning an idea for an app involves a lot of hard work," Vijay said. "There are so many components to building an app, including prototyping, design and wirreframing, user interface design and then coding and testing."

With WWDC, like most tech conferences, overwhelmingly dominated by white and Asian males, the company has been making efforts to diversify the attendance at the annual event.

Scott Lilly, who is vice president of programs at the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, said that Apple approached his organisation to offer scholarships to WWDC last year. "I think they are making sure that diversity is represented," Lilly said.

Under that programme this year, Lilly is sending two female African American college students and three African American men to WWDC

Short exposure to blue light helps in faster decision making

Blue light — present in electronic screens — can be used in occupational settings where alertness and quick decision making are important.

Spending half an hour in blue light may help you make difficult decisions faster up to 40 minutes after the exposure has ended, a new study suggests.

Researchers from University of Arizona in the US found that exposure to blue wavelength light led to subsequent increases in brain activity in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC) when participants were engaging in a cognitive task after cessation of light exposure.

The results also showed that a short single exposure to blue light for half an hour is sufficient to produce measurable changes in reaction times and more efficient responses (answering more items correctly per second) during conditions of greater cognitive load after the light exposure had ended.

Moreover, these improvements were directly associated with measurable changes in the activation of the prefrontal cortex.

“Previous studies only focused on the effects of light during the period of exposure. Our study adds to this research by showing that these beneficial effects of blue wavelength light may outlast the exposure period by over 40 minutes,” said Anna Alkozei from University of Arizona. “Importantly, our findings suggest that using blue light before having to engage in important cognitive processes may still impact cognitive functioning for over half an hour after the exposure period ended,” she added.

“Blue-enriched white light could be used in a variety of occupational settings where alertness and quick decision making are important — such as pilot cockpits, operation rooms or military settings. It could also be used in settings where natural sunlight does not exist — such as the International Space Station,” said Alkozei.  According to Alkozei, this may be valuable in a wide range of situations where acute blue light exposure is not a feasible option, such as testing situations.

The study consisted of 35 healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 32 years. Participants were randomised to receive a 30-minute exposure to either blue (active) or amber (placebo) light, immediately followed by a working memory task during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).

“These findings are important as they link the acute behavioural effects of blue light to enhanced activation of key cortical systems involved in cognition and mental control,” said William DS Killgore from University of Arizona.

The findings were published in the journal Sleep

Sanitary pads were originally invented for men. Intresting story

Did You Know Sanitary Pads Were Originally Invented For Men? Here’s The Interesting Story

Sanitary pads have long been something most men ignorantly shrink away from even talking about. But turns out this feminine product actually has a fascinating history that's closely linked with men in all their glorious macho manliness.

A post on My Period Blogrevealed that the first disposable sanitary pads were developed by nurses during the war in France. They were looking for a way to control the excessive bleeding among soldiers wounded on the battlefield.

Before this, women either did not use any menstrual devices or used reusable sanitary pads.

It was only later when the pads developed during the war started being used by American nurses in France that they came to be known as menstrual pads.

Subsequently in 1888, Kotex manufactured and commercially advertised 'Sanitary Towels for Ladies' based on the same model of WWI bandages only.

The basic structure of these pads involved cotton wool or a similar fibrous rectangle covered with an absorbent liner.

However, even after disposable pads were commercially available, for several years they were too expensive for many women to afford on a regular basis. It took several years for the item to become commonplace.

From there began the largely profitable industry of feminine hygiene with a variety of menstrual pads and tampons.

And the rest as they say, is history.

Tamil new year

Puthandu or Tamil New Year is celebrated between April and May, during the Chittrai month. According to the Gregorian calendar, the festival usually falls on the 14th April 2015. The day is also referred to as “ Varusha Pirappuy”.

Rituals Performed on Tamil New Year

Natives of Tamil Nadu follow certain rituals so as to ensure prosperity and well-being of their near and dear ones. One of the well-known traditions is to watch Kanni at the break of dawn. This particular act is believed to bring in good luck for the members of the family. People also give a start to their day by watching auspicious items like silver or gold jewelry, coconuts, raw rice, flowers, fruits and vegetables, nuts, betel leaves etc. After offering their morning prayers on New Year, they read Panchangam.

Tamil New Year Celebrations

During Tamil New Year, the state also organizes for a huge Car Festival near Kumbakonam, Tiruvadamarudur. In some areas, Chitthirai is also celebrated with great vigor. According to legendary evidences, this is the same day when Goddesses Meenakshi tied the nuptial lock with Lord Sundareswarar. Every year, the festival of Chitterai Thiruvizha is celebrated on the eve of Tamil New Year at the Meenakshi Temple. Besides, a gala exhibition- Chitterai Porutkaatchi is also organized on Tamil New Year. This exhibition is also referred to as Chitterai Vishu in certain regions of South Tamil Nadu.

The preparations for the New Year start well in advance. You will find the entrances of the houses decorated with kolams. Raw mangoes and neem flowers are offered to Gods and Goddesses which symbolizes prosperity and growth. Tamils give a start to their year with an herbal bath. The game of coconut (popularly known as por-thenkai in Tamil Nadu) is played during the New Year. Cart races are equally enjoyed on this eve. This festive season is a great time for renewing filial bonds and establishing rapport with your near and dear ones.

Here's why we kiss with our eyes closed

Here's why we kiss with our eyes closed

People close their eyes while kissing to allow the brain to properly focus on the task at hand.

A study on vision and tactile sensory experience concluded that our brain struggles to process another sense while also concentrating on the visual stimuli.

Melbourne: Have you ever thought why people close their eyes while locking lips? Is it "just one of those things that happens" or is there any other reason to it?

Psychologists have recently revealed that people close their eyes while kissing to allow the brain to properly focus on the task at hand, as brain can't deal with more than two things at once, reports News.com.au.

A study on vision and tactile sensory experience concluded that our brain struggles to process another sense while also concentrating on the visual stimuli.

The psychologists found "tactile, i.e. sense of touch, awareness depends on the level of perceptual load in a concurrent visual task."

Instead of reaching any conclusion with studying any couples locking lips, the participants were given visual tasks to complete while their tactile sense was measured.

To measure visual sense, participants completed letter-searching tasks of varying difficulty. The tactile response was measured by responding to a small vibration applied to one of their hands.

The same explanation can be applied to other pleasurable activities on the tactile sense, like dancing and sex, where people wish to focus on touch rather that other potentially distracting sensory experiences.

Here's how a newspaper rivalry inspired one of the most common words in English

The word ‘ok’ first appeared in print177 years ago on Wednesday, as a jab thrown in a rivalry between Boston and Providence newspapers.

The use of the two letters (or the fully-spelled version, ‘okay’) has spread around the world to indicate varying states of positivity. But theBoston Morning Post writer of a short item firing back at some snark from the Providence Journal likely had little knowledge that the joke would resonate through the ages.

Music helps recovery from respiratory problem

Music therapy helps recovery from respiratory disorders

New York: Music therapy can increase effectiveness of standard rehabilitation that patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other chronic respiratory disorders receive, said a new study.

COPD is a progressive lung disease with symptoms including shortness of breath, wheezing, an ongoing cough, frequent colds or flu, and chest tightness.

The findings suggest that music therapy may be an effective addition to traditional treatment for these disorders.

"The results of this study provide a comprehensive foundation for the establishment of music therapy intervention as part of pulmonary rehabilitation care," said study co-author Jonathan Raskin from Mount Sinai Beth Israel (MSBI), a hospital in New York, US.

The 68 study participants were diagnosed with chronic disabling respiratory diseases, including COPD.

Over the course of six weeks, a randomised group of these patients attended weekly music therapy sessions.

Each session included live music, visualisations, wind instrument playing and singing, which incorporated breath control techniques.

Certified music therapists provided active music-psychotherapy. The music therapy sessions incorporated patients' preferred music, which encouraged self-expression, increased engagement in therapeutic activities and an opportunity to cope with the challenges of a chronic disease.

"The care of chronic illness is purposefully shifting away from strict traditional assessments that once focused primarily on diagnosis, morbidity and mortality rates," Joanne Loewy from MSBI noted.

"Instead, the care of the chronically ill is moving toward methods that aim to preserve and enhance quality of life of our patients and activities of daily living through identification of their culture, motivation, caregiver/home trends and perceptions of daily wellness routines," Loewy said.

The study was published in the journal Respiratory Medicine.

India’s 1st Women-Only Beer Club Opens In Delhi.

India’s 1st Women-Only Beer Club Opens In Delhi. After All Why Should Boys Have All The Fun, Right?

Women, the times they truly are a-changing! And the harbinger of this change is beverage expert Karina Aggarwal as she brings to us the first ever beer club for women, quite aptly titled Smarty Pints Society. This is for all the women who have had to defend their choice when they confidently ordered a beer, and for all the women who ever thought that beer is too bitter, or beer is for the boys, brace yourselves because..

The game is about to change

on March 12, Def. Col. Social, Defence Colony from 6.30 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.

The objective was just to get women together, to taste and learn about beer, as an expert on beer herself Karina says,"I end up doing a lot of beer appreciations and notice that the women are almost always hesitant to ask questions or share opinions. They usually come up to me after and say something and i thought it was high time we had a group without men being around to claim prerogative."

Here's what you can expect

A fun, casual time, with fun casual people, so come dressed comfortably and ready to get down with some beer with the girls. You will figure out things like hops, malts, ale, pale, and all the lingo that goes with becoming a true-blue beer drinker. Karina also intends on making this a monthly thing at a new space in a new place, so while it might be Delhi this time, Bombay or Bangalore it could be you next.

Women harassment cases going up

Women harassment cases going up

S. P.
Tamil NaduCoimbatore‘
Most differences between couples are about supremacy'Blame it on issues over supremacy, financial or educational status or discontent in marriage life, complaints of harassment against women are on the rise in the city in 2011 when comparedto 2009 and 2010.Yet, 70 per cent of the victim's problems were solved through counselling by the city police and 30 per cent were left for logicalconclusion before a court of law.
Harassment against wife includes, beating of woman by husbandin inebriated condition, abuse by mother-in-law, father-in-law and relatives, suspecting fidelity of the woman, blaming wife for childlessness, blaming her parents, disability harassment, spying on their activities, verbal and nor-verbal abuse are the forms of harassment reported.Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Hema Karunakaran said that most of the differences between wife and husband were over supremacy and that too in the age group of 21 – 30 years
.When a woman approaches an All Women Police Station to file a complaint, priority is given for resolving the issue through expert counselling. The last option is registering a case, she added. When a husband or relative subject her to cruelty, a case would be filed under Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code in which, the guilty, upon conviction would get three years of imprisonment and fine.In case of harassment, case would be registered under Section 4 of Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act 2002 provides a maximum of three year imprisonment or Rs. 10,000 fine or both.In case of dowry harassment, the District Social Welfare Officer K. Aruna has to conduct an inquiry with the husband and wife andsubmit a report to the police station, after which the case is registered.

CounsellingExpert counselling is provided only if the couple wanted it, she added. However, a police official said that some women misuse the law by preferring complaints over petty issues with the husband or his family. They seek legal recourse to settle scores or intimidate the husband's family. Such petitions are often resolved by offering adequate counselling. This accounts for nearly 40 per cent of the dowry harassment cases registered.

The Alcohol Tracker, which has been developed by doctors and based on the clinical evidence of what works best, also provides built-in psychological therapies and helpline links for users to help steer them away from hazardous drinking.

Excess alcohol kills millions worldwide every year, but many available smartphone apps to manage drinking are not informed by clinical evidence and are largely for entertainment, said the developers of the new app.

Some apps even seem to promote rather than curb drinking, they added in a commentary published in the journal BMJ Innovations.

The Alcohol Tracker enables users to log the number of beers/shots/glasses of wine they have knocked back on a given day which it then tots up for them in units.

When the recommended daily or weekly limits have been exceeded, the app issues a warning.

The limits are defined by the recommended safe intake for men and women, stipulated by national guidance in the UK (NICE) and Canada.

The Alcohol Tracker also provides links to alcohol helplines and built-in psychological therapies, such as a behavioural goals aid. A validated questionnaire enables users to find out if their drinking puts them at risk.

LEVIS CEO HAS NOT Washed His Jean in a year

Levi’s CEO Has Not Washed His Jeans In A Year, And He Tells Us Exactly Why We Shouldn’t Either

Alright, so here's the scoop, and it's going to make you real happy if you don't enjoy laundry. And for this let's thank the CEO and President of Levi's, Chip Bergh who recently at an interview with Fortune Magazine explained why you should never wash your jeans.

Here's his unusual advice: Never wash a pair of jeans. Ever.

Speaking to Fortune, he said, "The point I was trying to make… it was a wake-up call to consumers that we go into autopilot and after we’re finished wearing something, we just automatically toss it into the laundry. A good pair of denim doesn’t really need to be washed in the washing machine except for very infrequently or rarely."

The reason behind this, he explained, was that washing a good pair of Levis actually causes damage to the material, and is a waste of water.

When asked about how he cleans his jeans when it gets dirty, he said, "Simply spot clean your jeans if they aren’t a total mess. And, when my jeans really need a wash, I do it the old fashioned way: I hand-wash them and hang-dry them."

He admitted that the (Levi’s) jeans he was wearing, ‘hadn’t seen the inside of a washing machine’ for a year.

World's Cheapest Smartphone FOR RS 251

Freedom 251 Launch: Your 5-Point Cheat Sheet to the World's Cheapest Smartphone

Ringing Bells, a little-know Noida-based company, has launched what it is calling India's most affordable smartphone, but Freedom 251 might well be the cheapest smartphone in the world. Here's what you need to know about the Freedom 251.

Ringing Bells had announced earlier that the Freedom 251 will be priced at "less than Rs. 500". But we can now confirm that the smartphone will be priced at Rs. 251 (less than $4). At that price, it's easily the most affordable smartphone in the world.

The website also lists important specifications of the Freedom 251: 4-inch display, 1.3GHz quad-core processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB internal storage (expandable up to 32GB), 3.2-megapixel back camera, 0.3-megapixel front camera, and a 1450mAh battery.

The Freedom 251 will be officially unveiled in New Delhi on Wednesday evening at an event that will be presided over by Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi, MP, with the Union Defence Minister Sri Manohar Parrikar as the Chief Guest.

Ringing Bells says the Freedom 251 smartphone has been developed 'with immense support' from the government and is touting it as a success story of PM Modi's flagship 'Make in India' scheme.

A smartphone priced at Rs. 251 will go a long way in connecting every Indian, and like the previous government tried to take computing to the masses with the Aakash tablet, the Freedom 251 has the potential to realise the 'Digital India' vision.

blogger

Blogger is a blog-publishing service that allows multi-user blogs with time-stamped entries. It was developed by Pyra Labs, which was bought by Google in 2003. Generally, the blogs are hosted by Google at a subdomain of blogspot.com. Blogs can also be hosted in the registered custom domain of the blogger (like www.example.com). So blogspot.com domain publishings will be redirected to the custom domain. A user can have up to 100 blogs per account.
Up until May 1, 2010, Blogger allowed users to publish blogs on other hosts, via FTP. All such blogs had (or still have) to be moved to Google's own servers, with domains other than blogspot.com allowed via custom URLs. Unlike WordPress.com, Blogger allows its users to use their own domain free of charge, while WordPress.com charges around $13 to use a custom domain. Blogger cannot be installed on a web server. One has to use DNS facilities to redirect a custom URL to a blogspot domain
.

History

On August 23, 1999, Blogger was launched by Pyra Labs. As one of the earliest dedicated blog-publishing tools, it is credited for helping popularize the format. In February 2003, Pyra Labs was acquired by Googleunder undisclosed terms. The acquisition allowed premium features (for which Pyra had charged) to become free. In October 2004, Pyra Labs' co-founder, Evan Williams, left Google. In 2004, Google purchasedPicasa; it integrated Picasa and its photo sharing utility Hello into Blogger, allowing users to post photos to their blogs.
On May 9, 2004, Blogger introduced a major redesign, adding features such as web standards-compliant templates, individual archive pages for posts, comments, and posting by email. On August 14, 2006, Blogger launched its latest version in beta, codenamed "Invader", alongside the gold release. This migrated users to Google servers and had some new features, including interface language in French, Italian, German and Spanish. In December 2006, this new version of Blogger was taken out of beta. By May 2007, Blogger had completely moved over to Google-operated servers. Blogger was ranked 16 on the list of top 50 domains in terms of number of unique visitors in 2007.
On February 24, 2015, Blogger announced it will no longer allow its users in late March to post sexually explicit content, unless the nudity on offer "substantial public benefit," for example in "artistic, educational, documentary, or scientific contexts." On February 28, 2015, accounting for severe backlash from long-term bloggers, Blogger reversed its decision on banning sexual content, going back to the previous policy that allowed explicit images and videos if the blog was marked as "adult".

Redesign

As part of the Blogger redesign in 2006, all blogs associated with a user's Google Account were migrated to Google servers. Blogger claims that the service is now more reliable because of the quality of the servers.
Along with the migration to Google servers, several new features were introduced, including label organization, a drag-and-drop template editing interface, reading permissions (to create private blogs) and new Web feed options. Furthermore, blogs are updated dynamically, as opposed to rewriting HTML files.
In a version of the service called Blogger in Draft, new features are tested before being released to all users. New features are discussed in the service's official blog. In September 2009, Google introduced new features into Blogger as part of its tenth anniversary celebration. The features included a new interface for post editing, improved image handling, Raw HTML Conversion, and other Google Docs-based implementations, including:
  • Adding location to posts via geotagging.
  • Post time-stamping at publication, not at original creation.
  • Vertical re-sizing of the post editor. The size is saved in a per-user, per-blog preference.
  • Link editing in compose mode.
  • Full Safari 3 support and fidelity on both Windows and Mac OS.
  • New Preview dialog that shows posts in a width and font size approximating what is seen in the published view.
  • Placeholder image for tags so that embeds are movable in compose mode.
  • New toolbar with Google aesthetics, faster loading time, and "undo" and "redo" buttons. Also added was the full justification button, a strike-through button, and an expanded color palette.
In 2010, Blogger introduced new templates and redesigned its website. The new post editor was criticized for being less reliable than its predecessor.

Available languages

Blogger is available in these languages: Arabic, Bengali, Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Filipino, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Gujarati, Hebrew, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Kannada, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Malay, Malayalam, Marathi, Norwegian, Oriya, Persian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese (Portugal), Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Tamil, Telugu, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Urdu Vietnamese. Nepali, Farashi.Bemba,Tonga,Tumbuka and Cewa.

Country-specific blogger addresses

Starting in February 2013, Blogger began integrating user blogs with multiple country-specific URLs. For example, exampleuserblogname.blogspot.com would be automatically redirected to exampleuserblogname.blogspot.ca in Canada, exampleuserblogname.blogspot.co.uk in the United Kingdom. Blogger explained that by doing this they could manage the blog content more locally so if there was any objectionable material that violated a particular country's laws they could remove and block access to that blog for that country through the assigned ccTLD while retaining access through other ccTLD addresses and the default Blogspot.com URL. However it should be noted that if a blog using a country-specific URL was removed it is still technically possible to still access the blog through Google's No Country Redirect override by entering the URL using the regular Blogspot.com address and adding /ncr after the .com.

Available designs

Blogger allows its users to choose from various templates and then customize them. Users may also choose to create their own templates using CSS. The new design template, known as "Dynamic View", was introduced on 31 August 2011 with Dynamic Views being introduced on 27 September 2011. It is built with AJAX, HTML5, and CSS3. The time for loading is 40 percent shorter than traditional templates, and allows user to present blog in seven different ways: classic, flipcard, magazine, mosaic, sidebar, snapshot, and timeslide. Readers still have the option to choose preferable views when the blog owner has set a default view. Some of the widgets (e.g., Labels, Profile, Link List, Subscription Links, Followers and Blog Archive etc.) are available for Dynamic Views; other templates are chosen by the blogger.
In April 2013, Blogger updated its HTML template editor that has some improvements to make it easy for the users to edit the blog's source code. The editor was updated with syntax highlight, number line and jump-to-widget button for ease of editing the code.
For over half a year dynamic views users were suffering from a bug causing custom CSS and page navigation often not to load properly. This happened because a JavaScript routine rendered the page before it was loaded. A blogger user fixed the template and published the fix*.

Integration

  • The Google Toolbar has a feature called "BlogThis!" which allows toolbar users with Blogger accounts to post links directly to their blogs.
  • "Blogger for Word" is an add-in for Microsoft Word which allows users to save a Microsoft Word document directly to a Blogger blog, as well as edit their posts both on- and offline. As of January 2007, Google says "Blogger for Word is not currently compatible with the new version of Blogger", and they state no decision has been made about supporting it with the new Blogger. However, Microsoft Office 2007 adds native support for a variety of blogging systems, including Blogger.
  • Blogger supports Google's AdSense service as a way of generating revenue from running a blog.
  • Blogger also started integration with Amazon Associates in December 2009, as a service to generate revenue. It was not publicly announced, but by September 2011 it appeared that all integration options had been removed and that the partnership had ended.
  • Windows Live Writer, a standalone app of the Windows Live suite, publishes directly to Blogger.
  • Blogger can be optionally integrated with Google+.
  • Google+ comments can be integrated with blogger comments.
  • The Campaigns tab in Blogger dashboard links to Adwords making it easier to create ads .
  • You may create and add HTML site map static page  to your blogger BlogSpot blogs using Blogger JSON Feed API which helps both website live visitors as well as Search Engine bots.

Blogger on mobile devices

Blogger has launched mobile applications for users with mobile devices. Users can post and edit blogs, and also share photos and links on Blogger through their mobile devices. Not only advanced mobile devices, such as smartphones, are being considered, since users can also post blogs via traditional cell phones by SMS and MMS.

The major two mobile operating systems that Blogger focuses on are Android and iOS. Blogger allow users to edit blogs anywhere through the app and either publish the blogs or save them as drafts. Quick navigation from posts and drafts is accessible from a list. Users can attach photos by taking a picture with a Blogger app or selecting pictures from their photo galleries. Sharing current locations on posts is also possible by tabbing My Location bar and adding locations. Users can also share photos and links directly to Blogger.

Blocking[edit]

Blogger has been blocked for various periods of time in the following countries:
  • India
  • Cuba
  • China
  • Fiji
  • Iran
  • Kazakhstan
  • Kyrgyzstan
  • Myanmar
  • Pakistan[29]
  • People's Republic of China
  • Russian Federation (some ISPs in 2012 blocking an IP address put into Federal List of Extremist Materials in 2011)
  • Syrian Arab Republic
  • Turkey
  • Vietnam
  • Yemen
Blocking of *.blogspot.com domains by keyword-based Internet filtering systems is also encountered due to the domain containing the substring "gspot".

Limitations

Blogger has the following limitations on content storage and bandwidth, per user account:
  • Blog description – 500 characters max; Hyper Text Markup Language markup not supported
  • Number of blogs – 100 blogs per account
  • Number of labels – 5,000 unique labels per blog (an increase from the original 2,000), 20 unique labels per post
  • Number of pictures - Ordinarily, Up to 1 GB of total storage, shared with Picasa Web. If you've upgraded to Google+, your photos will be stored in Google Photos, where you have 15GB of storage space shared with Gmail and Drive. However[citation needed], if one has signed up for Google+ account, images less than 16 megapixels (4920 x 3264) would not be counted to this storage limit. For users not signed up for Google+, 800 x 800 pixels and below images would not be included in this storage space.
  • Number of posts – There is no limit on the number of posts one can have in one blog.
  • Size of pages – Individual pages (the main page of a blog or archive pages) are limited to 1 MB
  • Size of pictures – If posted via Blogger Mobile, limited 250 KB per picture;[33] posted pictures are scaled to 1600px
  • Number of Pages - There is no limit on the number of pages you can have on one blog
  • Team members (those who can write to a blog) – 100 invitations per blog
  • Favicon – Any square image less than 100KB
On February 18, 2010,[34] Blogger introduced "auto-pagination", which limited the number of posts that could be displayed on each page, often causing the number of posts on the main page to be less than that specified by the user and leading to a hostile response from some users.
Private blogs are limited to only 100 members.

Support

The official support channel is the Blogger Product Forum. This online discussion forum, delivered using Google Groups, serves Blogger users of varying experience, and receives some monitoring from Google staff. "Top contributors" are community-members nominated by the Google staff who enjoy additional privileges including managing discussions and direct access to Google staff. There is likely to be a top contributor or other knowledgeable person reading the forum almost all the time.

A number of people, including some top contributors, run personal blogs where they offer advice and post information about common problems.
StackExchange's Web Applications forum has a tag for "blogger", which is used for questions about various blogging platforms, including Blogger.[38]
